The York Cat Trail app (“the app”) is provided by York Lucky Cats, 34 Coney Street, York, YO1 9ND, United Kingdom. The app is built and maintained on our behalf by Penn Studio Limited.
This policy explains what information the app uses, why, and what happens to it. The short version: the app does not ask you to create an account, does not collect your name or contact details, and does not use advertising or analytics trackers.
What the app does
The app is a free guide to the cat statues around York city centre. It shows a trail map, walking directions, a directory of the cats with their stories, and a kids quiz with a gift that can be collected at the York Lucky Cats shop.
Information the app uses
Your location (optional)
If you allow it, the app uses your device’s location to:
- show where you are on the trail map
- sort the cats by distance from you
- give walking directions to a cat
Location is only used while the app is open. You can decline location access when first asked, or turn it off later in your device Settings, and the app will still work. The map and directory function without location; you just won’t see your own position or distances.
To calculate walking directions, the app sends your current coordinates and the destination to a routing service run by the OpenStreetMap community (routing.openstreetmap.de). This request contains no name, account or device identifier, and we do not keep a record of it. The routing service’s handling of requests is covered by the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy at https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy.
We never store your location on our servers and never share it with anyone else.
Map tiles
The trail map is drawn using map tiles from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org). When the map loads, your device requests the tiles for the area on screen, which is standard for any online map. These requests include your IP address, as any web request does, but no location data from your device.
Quiz progress
Your answers and progress in the kids quiz are saved only on your device, so that you can pick up where you left off. This information is never sent to us. Deleting the app removes it.
Technical information
The app loads its content from our website, yorkluckycattrailapp.co.uk. Like any website, our hosting provider records standard server logs, which include the IP address of the device making the request, the page requested, and the time. These logs are used only to keep the service running and secure, and are not combined with any other information about you.
Information we do not collect
- No account, sign-in, name, email address or phone number
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No advertising identifiers
- No cookies used for tracking
- No contacts, photos, camera or microphone access
Links to other sites
The app contains links to the York Lucky Cats online shop and to our social media pages (Facebook, Instagram and TikTok). These open in a separate browser view and are governed by those sites’ own privacy policies.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and includes a quiz aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children. The quiz gift is collected in person at the shop and no details are taken in the app.
Your rights
Because the app does not collect personal information that identifies you, there is normally nothing for us to access, correct or delete. If you have a question or concern about privacy, you can contact us using the details below. Under UK data protection law you also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at https://ico.org.uk.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and change the date at the top.
